Ponti Seafood Grill
Still turning heads at 20
A Mediterranean-style villa, the view, great private dining rooms,
artwork and wonderful food—Ponti continues to be the place to be after
20 years.
It’s
clear that when things are done right, there’s no expiration date on a
restaurant. It’s also clear that a classic concept stands the test of
time. Ponti is a sophisticated spot that feels like a comfortable
shoe—one you want to slip into time and again. The only trendiness about
the concept in 1990 was the fusion menu and they picked the right trend
to jump start, as fusion has become main stream. One of their opening
dishes was Thai curry penne with scallops and Dungeness crab. It’s still
on the menu and a huge seller. Opening chef Alvin Binuya has come full
circle and heads up the Ponti kitchen in stellar fashion.

Long-time customers greet each other and the staff with familiarity,
enjoying the neighborhood feel. Owner Richard Malia welcomes everyone as
he cruises through the restaurant and lounge, greeting newcomers and
chatting with old friends.
Always charitable (Malia has raised money for many organizations,
with a focus on the Juvenile Diabetes Association), Richard and
wife/co-owner Sharon have decided on the perfect way to celebrate
Ponti’s 20th anniversary. They are starting a scholarship
fund for culinary students at Seattle Central Community College (SCCC)
and are kicking off the fundraising with a celebratory dinner at Ponti
on November 13. The dinner will consist of five courses created by Chef
Alvin with wine pairings. Wineries are donating wine for the event: Long
Shadows Vintners, DeLille Cellars, Columbia Winery and Chateau Ste.
Michelle. By donating, they are ensuring that the highest possible
benefit can be given to the scholarship fund.

The dinner will differ slightly from other fundraisers. Instead of
one seating, guests will be seated throughout the evening, choosing the
time they would like to have dinner. They can come on their own or
reserve a table and bring a larger party. Staff and students from SCCC
will be on hand in both the kitchen and dining room. Malia’s goal is to
raise $15,000 to start the scholarship. If you would like to donate to
the scholarship fund but can’t attend the dinner, please contact Jessica
Edwards at Ponti (206-284-3000 or Jessica@pontiseafoodgrill.com).
In addition to this event, Richard and Alvin are also celebrating by
offering a three-course meal (appetizer, salad or soup; entrée, dessert)
for $30 every day in November except Thanksgiving and the November 13
fundraising event. This will run in conjunction with the popular Dine
Around Seattle promotion. The difference is that guests can choose their
dishes from the entire menu, allowing them to return and sample
different items over the course of the month.
If
you’ve not been to Ponti or haven’t been in awhile, this is a wonderful
time to get (re)acquainted. Sitting on the hill overlooking the Ship
Canal, trees and bushes are changing their look and color, lights on the
Fremont bridge and in the neighborhood are lighting up earlier and the
coziness of the main dining room is even more enjoyable. Surrounded by
lovely artwork, white linen and beautiful flowers, you’ll wonder why
you’re not there on a weekly basis!
While starting new traditions like the scholarship fund, other annual
treats are on the horizon. Their yearly three-course Thanksgiving day
feast has become a must-continue tradition for many. And in December
only, they serve lunch on weekdays—a great way to celebrate the holidays
or just enjoy a relaxing, delicious lunch. Treat yourself!
After 20 years, Ponti is still creating fun, memorable and delicious
moments in peoples’ lives. That’s a pretty satisfying feeling for Ponti
owners, staff and guests.
