Seattle Cellars
Belltown's World of Wine
Watching
Belltown grow up over the last ten years, Seattlites have seen it change from
a frumpy, dark neighborhood to a Cosmopolitan center in a city that's been on
the move in so many ways.
So, in 1996 Dave Woods took a step in the right direction
when he left his 20 year job at Mobil Oil Corporation and, together with his
wife, opened Seattle Cellars.
Woods, a gentle and friendly man, is here to please his
customers, noting, "We want to provide to our customers what they
need." The statement holds true when you take a moment and stroll
through his shop. Here you'll find hundreds of wines from Europe, South
America, Australia and of course the Northwest and California.
Each
Thursday evening you'll find Woods mingling with customers as Seattle Cellars
provides an open tasting, sharing the latest releases from wineries all over the
world. By state law they can only serve up to four selections during a tasting,
so you can bet you'll be treated to the best. Multiply that four by 52 weeks of
the year and you could end up sampling over 200 wines in a year by making this a
regular stop during your week. A new winery opens in Washington
State about every 14 days, so here's a great way to sample many of the newbies
as they are introduced.
If that's not enough, consider the tastings they hold on Saturday
afternoons, which are sporadic, based on when a local vintner has a new release
that has just been brought to market. These tastings typically occur a few
times each month. And if you still need to taste more, what better way to
do it than by experiencing one of their Wine Dinners, which they hold at local
restaurants on average every other month.
You can keep yourself abreast of each of these upcoming
events by getting on Seattle Cellars' mailing list. Woods produces a
newsletter every other month giving all the details.
Seattle Cellars also provides a few other things besides
just wine. The store carries a fine selection of accessories including
velvet bags during the holidays. In addition, they always have a few unique
indoor water fountains which can be purchased as well.
Cold storage is available and has been very popular with
the locals, so from time to time space is sold out.
Not
sure what kind of wine you're looking for? The staff here is knowledgeable,
with each member having a passion for the vine. Woods also has a
computerized wine guide in the store where customers can browse at their
leisure.
If there's a special taste you're looking for in a wine,
chances are good... very good, that Seattle Cellars can provide you with what
you have in mind and introduce you to several others at the same time.
