Diggity Dog

I Need A Dog On It!

It's a lovely Tuesday and I decide to head out for a fancy lunch. All of the sudden I see a $25 ticket for parking my vehicle in front of my house. What a town! Immediately the urge to cut expenses comes over me and I'm thinking about having cheap eats. Something new?

Across the street from the Honey Bear Bakery in Northern Wallingford (Meridian and 55th to be exact) there's a new hot dog place in town. Hey, I know my hot dogs, I used to eat at Pink's in L.A., famous for serving Orson Wells two chili/guacamole cheese dogs just minutes before his untimely death (or was it timely?) on the sidewalk out front.

...Now I need a dog.

Dog art hanging at DiggityDiggity Dog is open for business and serving to all ages. Out front you're welcomed by the establishment's logo and inside the walls are covered with some the of the greatest dog art around. You'll be taken aback by the green table and red chair motif. There's a kids table and the magazine rack has all kinds of offerings including Sunset, Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone. I enjoyed this since I was out by myself that day and had cancelled my Rolling Stone subscription some time ago when the rag stopped publishing Hunter S. Thompson stories, basically because Thompson was too undependable about meeting deadlines.

...Back to the dogs.

Ten different dog items await your palate, ranging from the standard dog to Italian, Cilantro Turkey, Hawaiian, and Chicken Habanero. You order the dog and proceed to the "all you can throw on" condiment bar that features all the usual fixings plus FREE chili. Not even 7-11 or Circle K offers free chili, so chow down chili lovers!

The restaurant is missing one major food group by not offering much in the way of greens (no salads, sorry) and the chip selection is limited to high salt/fat Tim's Cascade, but I have put in my request for something a little healthier, and you can, too. The quality of the meats in the dogs are top notch. The Kosher dog is Hebrew International and some of the others are flown in from different places since Washington seems to be shy on quality dogs.

Co-owner Marcia SeedDiggity Dog was started by Marcia Seed and Chuck Haber and actually began as a New York style hot dog cart. The two offer catering and customers can also pick up quantities of uncooked dogs to take out for picnicking and barbecuing. Prices for the "dogs to go" will be listed on the back of the menu shortly.  A new store has recently opened on Capitol Hill.
