Bad Albert's
206-782-9623
5100 Ballard Ave NW,
Seattle
Ballard
Veer off the main drag in Ballard and go back in time to a small neighborhood in a fishing district with blocks of storefronts. One of these storefronts has been remodeled into a one-room pub with both tall tables and stools, and traditional-height tables and chairs. Regulars enjoy a large selection of beers on tap while munching on less-than-standard bar munchies. The brews are an even better deal during happy hour and go down well during live blues performances.

Sleek industrial with low-slung couches, this spot offers bars (and restrooms--thank you!) on both floors. Exposed brick walls share their history in this former Ballard office building. The upper floor also houses two pool tables. Don't just think of this as a watering hole--they offer some interesting small plates that might just be what draws you back.

Burrito Loco

9211 Holman Rd NW,
Seattle
Ballard, Crown Hill, Blue Ridge
This Mexican family restaurant is one of the most authentic in town. They carry a wide variety of items to chose from, including the traditional "tongue taco" for the brave and deep, rich mole. It's located in a small strip mall on a busy street--easy to miss, but important not to.

Carnegie's
206-789-6643
2026 NW Market St,
Seattle
Ballard
When you're in the mood for something a bit more upper crust, consider Carnegie's. Antiques, lots of dark wood accents, white linens and curved walls in several rooms offer a lovely environment. The full bar is a nice place to try a Pernod (or a Bud Light--your choice) and sample a small plate, appetizer or cheese selection. The dining room menu changes, but you can usually find beef, chicken, maybe Wiener Schnitzel and coq au vin, seafood and lamb.

Cocina Esperanza
206-783-7020
3127 NW 85th St,
Seattle
Ballard
Small, cozy and candle-lit, you'll want to stay forever. They've created their own recipes that exemplify authentic cuisine from Monterrey, Mexico and prove that Mexican food does not have to be covered in cheese and doused in sour cream. Names of dishes (enchiladas, quesadillas, tostadas) may be familiar, but the flavors will take you away from the norm.

Chow Foods comes to Ballard via the old Ballard Firehouse. They've done a nice job of making it Chow--wood booths, spacious feel, open kitchen with brick oven. Like other Chow venues, the menu is normal foods with a twist. Their breakfast hash with everything in it is called "Clean up on Aisle 12 Hash." Got to love it. Expect soups, salad, apple-wood grilled items and pizzas. There's a nice big bar with a TV (good sport watching spot) and a large room for private dining.

KISS Café
206-789-KISS (5477)
2817 NW Market St,
Seattle
Ballard
Keep it simple Seattle! And the KISS Café does just that. The menu features basic sandwiches as well as a few standards perhaps you hadn’t thought about in a while like a PB&J. There are also a few soup and salad offerings. Things get a little adventuresome, uh - spicy, when you order up Oakley’s Jambalya which incorporates jalapenos where the Okra used to be. They tout an extensive beer and wine selection (sorry kids, no hard drinks here--uh-well, they do have hard cider). Ambience is modernesque with no less than three widescreen TVs making this a good location for the afternoon game.

Nothing is over $9 food-wise and there's a full bar--so get on down and have a margarita with your mole negro or posole. Small plates are fun to share or hoard.
