94 Stewart
206-441-5505
94 Stewart St,
Seattle
Pike Place Market
Owner/chef Cindy Norton describes her restaurant as being a "Northwest-style bistro with New American food, using the world as a palette." In other words, recognizable food with international spices. Check out the NW BLT--pan-fried oysters and bacon. They use fresh, local ingredients, so the menu can change frequently. They're also big believers in the beauty of food and wine together, so take a look at that wine list.

Bacco Café
206-443-5443
86 Pine St,
Seattle
Pike Place Market
This tiny café is nestled beneath the Inn at the Market and is a choice spot to enjoy a few quiet moments before heading back into the fray at the Pike Place Public Market. Open for breakfast and lunch, it offers more than appears likely from its size. Eggs Benedict doesn't have to be traditional--why not try it with salmon or avocado? Belgian waffles with strawberries and whipped cream disappear quickly.

Bad Albert's
206-782-9623
5100 Ballard Ave NW,
Seattle
Ballard
Veer off the main drag in Ballard and go back in time to a small neighborhood in a fishing district with blocks of storefronts. One of these storefronts has been remodeled into a one-room pub with both tall tables and stools, and traditional-height tables and chairs. Regulars enjoy a large selection of beers on tap while munching on less-than-standard bar munchies. The brews are an even better deal during happy hour and go down well during live blues performances.

Beba's Deli Market
206-770-9595
2301 5th Ave, Suite 103,
Seattle
Downtown
Beba's has been around for a long time and is still a great place for sandwiches. But owner Nazir Khamisa has taken it to a new level, creating a place where you can get almost anything between 6:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Pasta? They've got it. Breakfast? You bet. Jumbo baked potatoes, lasagna, espresso, salads, soup? Yes, yes, yes.

Buckley's on Queen Anne
206-691-0232
232 First Ave W,
Seattle
Queen Anne (Lower)
Let's hope Buckley's makes a go of it (in general and in this location which has turned over so much that it makes your head spin). It's a place that feels like things are happening there--probably because of the high ceilings. It's loud most of the time and really loud when a sporting event is on TV. Good burgers, salads, fish and chips and sandwiches fill the pub grub category, but there are also pastas, a stir fry, chicken and steak.

Café Septieme
206-860-8858
214 Broadway E,
Seattle
Capitol Hill
The importance of dessert cannot be overstated, which is why they are displayed right at the entrance of this café. Specifically, the devil’s food cake with chocolate frosting should be ordered first, then and only then should attention be turned to main dishes. Two storefronts combine to form this café, with a full bar on one side and dining on the other.

Deception Café & Grill
360-293-9250
5596 State Route 20,
Anacortes
Out-of-town!
Deception Pass is so beautiful, you have to go there several times a year just to look. And right down the road is the Deception Café & Grill, just waiting to serve you breakfast, lunch or dinner. Their menu veers from the common (2 eggs any style, chicken strips, burgers) to all over the place (yellow Thai curry, Mediterranean sandwich, jager schnitzel). And it's good. They work with local producers to bring in fresh ingredients. Great spot for families. Beer and wine.

206-297-1852
2052 NW Market St,

Ballard
What a great combo--an upscale deli serving a variety of sandwiches, soups and more, plus a gourmet shop selling cooking-related items, including foods. Check out the refrigerated cases--you won't go home empty handed (or empty stomach-ed).

Flow Lounge
206-282-0142
2 Boston St,
Seattle
Queen Anne (Upper)
Flow is lounge central on top of Queen Anne. The bar area itself is lovely with copper tones. The "dining" area is low cocktail tables and cushy chairs. We say "dining" because it's not really a restaurant--they're focused on cocktails and other beverages with some food to go along. They have a nice selection of small plates, but also offer some big bites. Food ranges from pot stickers to rib eye steak.

Grand Cru Wine Bar
425-455-4278
1020 108th St NE, Ste 100,
Bellevue
Bellevue
This cool urban space located on the ground floor of a luxury apartment building is just the spot to try wines by the glass, bottle and flight while pairing with small plates and signature plates/platters. Dishes have a global bent from rabbit roulade to pulled pork sliders. Signature plates focus on wine-friendly foods--charcuterie and cheese (paired with champagne, white wine, red wine). Wine prices range from very reasonable to pricey--something for any occasion.

Jasmine
206-382-2161
1102 4th Ave,
Seattle
Downtown
On looks alone, Jasmine is a draw. The front of the house is the bar--small spot lights beam up at the bar from foot level, a blue-lit table draws your eyes and blue globes hang in the front window. A lounging area across from the bar sports wire mesh dividing curtains that give a hint of privacy. Textures play a big part--a "furry" fabric curtain, tiles on the wall, earth-toned reds and oranges mix with blues and greens. It works. The dining room is a few steps up in the back. At lunch it's an "open stir fry bar" (very Mongolian grill-ish). At dinner, choose from internationally spiced seafood, salmon, steak and chicken.
