Jules Maes Saloon
206-957-7766
5919 Airport Way S,
Seattle
Georgetown
Opened in the late 1800s, Jules Maes stuck around until 2000, then closed. It jumped back into action in 2004. It's not much on food (dogs), but there's live music and DJ's, pinball and pool and a well-stocked bar.

Little Coney
206-782-6598
8003 Seaview Ave NW,
Seattle
Ballard
Burgers, dogs, fries and fish & chips lead the way at this fast food stand in the most unlikely place--at the south end of Golden Gardens park. And while the food is nothing to write home about, there's something nice about grabbing a chili dog and a shake on a warm summer day or evening and watching the sun light up or set over the spectacular Olympic view.

Ballard
Gigantic, tasty burgers will have you looking for your to-go box before you ever place your order! Beyond the norm is the name of the game here with numerous concoctions of your favorite proteins on the bun. And yes, Martha, you can get the much sought-after TurDuckIn in Seattle. In 2010, they'll be adding experimental and traditional hot dogs, sweets, more sides and new shakes.

Mike's Chili Parlor
206-782-2808
1447 NW Ballard Way,
Seattle
Ballard
Serious loyalty is given to Mike’s, partly for the chili and partly for the fact it’s been a hangout since 1922. Mike Semandiris opened it and his great grandson, also Mike Semandiris, runs it now. His daughter represents the next generation at Mike's. The rooftop neon sign still signals to people as they zip or crawl across the Ballard Bridge. Tap beers go well with the burgers, dogs, fries and chili. The chili recipe has not been altered since the beginning of time. Come early as locals and other regulars fill the place (and it often fills with smoke as well). As if the chili isn't enough, there's a pool table and a few games.

Shorty's
206-441-5449
2222 Second Ave,
Seattle
Belltown
Hot dog! There are lots of dogs here--Vienna, kosher, bratwurst, Italian hot links. It's just like Coney Island. Atmosphere is limited--it's really a pinball joint. Take-out?

It's take out only at this small spot. Order a dog and head toward the condiments. Side dishes include chili, coleslaw and chips (is that a side dish?).
